Choosing the medical terminology word recognition program brings up the main menu, which contains four choices: Administrator, Evaluation, Training, and Exit Program. Clicking on "Training" reveals a submenu containing 17 categories of medical terms: 13 are categorized by medical specialty, while 4 define general, surgical , pharmaceutical, and lab terms. The only course currently available is the general terms; however, the remainder of the specialties will be available in the year 2008.

Once a category is selected, a new screen appears with the first term in print and, if the student chooses, with an audio pronunciation as well. The student thinks of the correct definition and selects one of two on-screen choices: "I think I know," or "I don't know." Clicking on the former revels a new screen with the correct definition beneath the term, and two more choices: "Got it right" or "Got it wrong." If the student selected the correct response, a click on the former brings up the next term. Any time the student doesn't know the word, or has the wrong response, the program immediately displays the word broken down into its root and prefix. Clicking on either one defines what they mean.

Student proceed at their own pace. If trainees learn quickly, the program moves along with them at the same rate. However, if trainees are having problems, the program slows down until they get it right. Current learning rates have been documented at an average of 100 words per hour.

The medical transcription program operates in a similar manner, except that the terms are dictated by a narrator. The student either types the word and presses Enter, or selects from three menu buttons: one has the narrator repeat the term, another asks for the term to be explained, a third asks for the next term. If the medical term is spelled correctly, the next term is presented. If the spelling is incorrect, the correct spelling of the word is shown, and the medical term is saved for re-presentation at a later date until you learn it. Don't confuse this training with standard transcription training. The program teaches only the medical terms you need to learn. Most traditional courses give you long-winded medical transcription reports for practice which waste 90% of your time typing plain English words.

When students feel that all the medical terminology in a category has been mastered, they can return to the main menu and select "Evaluation". A screen appears asking in which program the student wishes to be evaluated. Selecting the word recognition feature of the program triggers a timed test in which medical terms appear on the screen one at a time with multiple choice responses.

Three of the responses are definitions, only one of which is correct. The fourth response is "I don't know". Points are given for each correct answer and bonus points are give for choosing "I don't know". On the other hand, higher point values are subtracted for every wrong answer. The object of this, as quality is critical in using medical terminology, is to get students to admit when they don't know something (and therefore be likely to ask for advice in the workplace) rather than guess wrong.

If the student chooses to be evaluated in the medical transcription program, a similarly timed test begins, but the medical terms are dictated and the student enters them using the keyboard. Pressing the space bar causes the narrator to repeat the term, while pressing Enter without entering the word moves on to the next word. Again, higher points are deducted for wrong answers than are deducted for entering no response.

Both programs track every response, creating a database with the percentage of right and wrong responses; how often the student asks for help; and how long it takes the student to learn each medical term. These data are available to the trainer via the administrator feature in the program , thus allowing both the trainee and the trainer to monitor progress.

The medical terminology and medical transcription programs were developed by the principal of Best Practice Transfer Ltd. using the same techniques he used for over 20 years to teach second languages in Germany, Italy and Canada. In effect, learning the language of Doctors and Hospitals is the same as learning a foreign language - in this case Latin and Greek.  These same language principles are used to make both the medical terminology and medical transcription training courses function in both Spanish and English, with the ability to switch between the two languages at a click of a button. An interactive training course with 9 lessons that teaches the recognition of 8000 medical terms. The trainee chooses when help is required, and terms are broken into component roots with explanations. The course calculates when a trainee needs more help, and adjusts the course to meet the individual requirements of each trainee. A medical terminology and medical transcription training version is available where the trainee can switch between the languages enabling for example, a Spanish-speaking trainee to learn English medical terminology, and vice versa. The medical transcription course focuses on the correct spelling of medical terms, as opposed to most medical transcription training courses that teach full medical report typing, as 90% of words in an average medical transcription report are in straightforward English/Spanish, and there is a low return on investment spending 90% of a trainees' time typing words they already know.

The medical terminology evaluation is designed to measure the current ability and the training needs of individuals in comprehending the language of doctors and hospitals.

The medical terminology evaluation first measures the recognition of roots contained in medical terms to compare against frequency of occurrence of those roots in in the 8000 medical term vocabulary database.

The medical terminology evaluation then measures the recognition of medical terms, moving from simple to more difficult medical terms, comparing the frequency and the comprehension level of the medical term against the 8000 medical term database.

Finally, the medical terminology evaluation measures comprehension of medical abbreviations.

A full reporting module is shown when the evaluation has been completed. The report measures the knowledge level of the person taking the test against a vocabulary of 8000 medical terms by analyzing frequency of occurrence against the roots and medical terms correctly recognized, and the errors made during the evaluation. The report also indicates which (if any) of the lessons in the medical terminology training course need to be taken.
